Enjoying the Season!!

It's almost Christmas!!! We've had so much fun getting ready for our first Christmas together and are so excited we can hardly stand it! We have a beautiful 8.5' tree that we bought December 1st. Even having it on a stand with a pretty angel on top, it doesn't quite touch our ceiling! It's so lovely. We feel really lucky being able to have a real tree. It smells so nice...

We got a package from Paul's mother after Halloween with some ornaments from Paul's childhood and some that she threw in for us just to round things out. It was a very thoughtful gift and we had a lot of fun putting the familiar decorations on our own tree.

Paul strung white lights all around our front window and put them on a timer so they come on every evening and go off at night. It's really fun to come home to our lights shining in our window.

Since we'll soon be losing our friends Mike and Crystal Weber to the enticements of Corporate Kohl's in Wisconsin and student teaching for Crystal, we thought it would be appropriate to have them over for an evening before they leave. We made gingerbread houses.

We had so much fun watching them creating their cozy interior, complete with Christmas tree, fireplace and stockings (it was adorable). Then watching as their roof collapsed and was reconstructed again and again. ;-) We had the advantage of finishing ours the next day, so it was a little more secure (Paul's experience in building did help some too...). We left it with my family to enjoy.

I have no words to describe the way I feel after reading the following about water from charity:water.org

Almost 1 billion people in the world suffer from the lack of clean drinking water

That's one in eight people on this planet

According to the organization's website,

"unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation cause 80% of all sickness and disease, and kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war. Many people in the developing world, usually women and children, walk more than three hours every day to fetch water that is likely to make them sick. Those hours are crucial, preventing many from working or attending school. Additionally, collecting water puts them at greater risk of sexual harassment and assault. Children are especially vulnerable to the consequences of unsafe water. Of the 42,000 deaths that occur every week from unsafe water and a lack of basic sanitation, 90% are children under 5 years old" (emphasis added). Click here for link.

I am grateful for pure water.

We've started our own campaign.

We were sooooo excited to wake up to snow the other day. What a beautiful surprise! Here are a couple of pictures we took of our view.

Triple Digits

2. Paul is great at hanging stuff.
3. Mary is afraid of finding spiders in bed.
4. Paul is very romantic.
5. Mary is afraid of finding spiders in the jeans she left on the floor.
6. Paul likes to get his back scratched. Always.
7. Mary LOVES pickles! And hates spiders...
8. Paul is a surprisingly good cook.
9. Mary is the most beautiful thing to wake up to in the morning.
10. Paul can fix anything.
11. Mary is very cuddly.

Our First House Project

When we moved into our new apartment, I was elated to hear that we would be allowed to paint! I love changing things around and think that a fresh coat of paint can re-make a room.

After lots of brainstorming together, Paul and I decided that the bathroom would look good in a light blue with chocolate brown to go with the blue fixtures. It already had some pretty beadboard and trim, but unfortunately the beadboard was a dismal grey.

I began scouting good bargains for "oops" paint, and came across a steal. I had stopped by Kwal paint just before they were closing and was thrilled to find out that their prices for oops paint had dropped (formerly $4 a gallon, down to a dollar). I snooped around the paint selection for a second before finding a light blue AND a chocolate brown in the right shades! I was sooooo excited. A new bathroom color for only 2 bucks. I hurried over to the counter to pay, but since he didn't want to hassle with a transaction for only two dollars, the clerk walked me out to the car with two free cans of paint.

Paul and I stayed up until the wee hours of the morning painting, but got it all done in one shot (we didn't start until after 10:00 p.m.). It took several coats to get the colors to look right, but we had fun. Paul took down the mirror, medicine cabinet, etc. and put them all back up again.

Let us know what you think!

This Is Halloween...

Now it's time for witchy-witches,
Flying 'cross the moon.
Sweep away the gobble-gobblins
With your worn-out broom.
Jack-o-lanterns in the window,
with their smiles so bright.
Owls wake up, and call "Yoo-hoo!"
It's Halloween tonight. BOO!!!

Mary and I were very excited for our first holiday together as a married couple... Halloween!! We decided to dress up as Remus Lupin, the werewolf, and Nymphadora Tonks, the punk witch, from Harry Potter. We found it fitting since they were newly weds. We had just finished the Harry Potter series and started on our costumes right away.

After work on Saturday, we started on the makeup, hair, etc., then headed over to Mary's family's house. We drove her sisters around as they looted the town of all it's candy. They made quite a haul! It was a lot of fun. We topped off the night with a scary movie... "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken."

We were sad to see Halloween go, but are excited for Thanksgiving. Gobble Gobble...

The Wedding!!

Paul and I drove to the temple together. It was a beautiful drive and we enjoyed the time to unwind and prepare ourselves for the big day. We had decided to have our sealing in the afternoon to give us a full morning to get ready. It was a good thing that we did.

We were sealed together for time and eternity in the Manti Temple at 2:15 p.m. on August 8, 2009. It was a beautiful sealing. We were blessed to have so many friends and family present.

On our way home from the temple, we stopped to get a bite at The Malt Shoppe in Ephraim, UT. It was fun to do the drive-through in a wedding dress and suit. We had them take a picture for us and saved the malt menu as a memento.

The Proposal

Mary had mentioned that she had always wanted to watch the sun setting on the ocean. Seeing as we were on the east coast, I figured the next best thing would be to watch the sun rise. One morning I got up at five and snuck out in the jeep to do some reconnaissance. It took me about fifteen minutes to drive to the spot I had envisioned in my mind and there was still time before the sun had started rising. The sky had only started to change colors. The next morning, I woke up Mary at the same time and we headed to the beach.

Mary didn't know that I had the ring. We had been looking at several different places in Utah, but hadn't quite found what we wanted yet, and were going to have to continue the search once we got back. Or so she thought. I had met with Richard Wilson of Wilson Diamonds in Provo the day before we left. It was about eleven in the morning and we had met to discuss different options for different rings. After suggesting some alterations to him on one of the rings, we decided it would be perfect and I asked him to start on it so that it would be ready when we got back from Delaware. He asked when we were leaving and left his office when I told him we'd be flying out the next morning. He came back five minutes later, saying he had just spoken with his goldsmith and that he could have the ring done for me that same afternoon. I called Mary and told her that the meeting hadn't gone well and that he had been rude and was difficult to work with. We agreed that we would continue looking once we got back. The ring was ready by five and Richard even let me walk out of the store with the ring, without having financed it yet. He said we'd figure it out, once we got back to Utah.

I had placed the ring in my book bag, along with my camera. I told Mary I didn't want to get sand in my camera and had her carry the bag as we drove, oblivious to the fact that the ring was inside. We got to the beach and watched the sky as it changed colors, and as the sun came up over the ocean. We sat and talked for a while to the sound of seagulls and the waves crashing against the rocks, enjoying the view of the distant lighthouse and the passing ships (with the occasional school of dolphins off the shore).

During our conversation, the ring made it's way from the bag to my pocket. Mary, of course, none the wiser. As we discussed our future, Mary began to voice some concerns. She was nervous, especially after spending time with me and my family in Delaware. She felt that there was so much about me that she didn't know and that she was overwhelmed with the idea of marriage. She said however, that she would feel more secure if she had a ring on her finger. She asked if we could start looking as soon as we got back to Utah. Trying to be difficult, and catch her off guard, I asked simply, "why?" I could tell she didn't like that response as she turned away, not knowing what to say. This of course gave me the opportunity to remove the ring and drop to one knee before she turned back. Upon seeing the ring, I asked her to marry me. She started to cry, which of course made me cry, and we embraced as she said, "yes!!"

We walked down the beach until we came across an older couple. The husband was swimming with their dog, as the wife stood on the shore. We greeted them, told them that we had just gotten engaged, and that they were the first to know. She hugged us, unexpectedly, and congratulated us. We had her take some pictures. We figured, we might want to remember that day...

Delaware Trip

We went to Delaware at the end of June. It was exciting to travel together and to meet Paul's family. It was the longest flight I had ever been on in my life, but it was fun getting to be together. I was a little nervous to meet his family, but I was soon met with a warm welcome. They were all so kind to me and made me feel accepted.

We stayed the first night in Middletown, then headed down to a beach house in Lewes where we stayed for the rest of the week...

The Blind Date

Mary and I met on a blind date that was set up by our mutual friend Sam. He and I met during the summer before high school. Sam met Mary when he moved into the apartment complex across the street from her. For the longest time he had talked about setting us up on a date, but for whatever reason, it never worked out. We finally settled on having dinner one Sunday afternoon at Sam's apartment. I made the chicken and Sam warmed up frozen vegetables. His date made the dessert and Mary brought the mashed potatoes. She must have started growing them that morning because she showed up really late! The dinner was good (slightly cold by the time she got there) and the conversation interesting. Everyone else knew each other, and trying to have a "get to know you" conversation in front of them was challenging. Plus, I had a hard time maintaining eye contact because she had the most beautiful eyes I had ever seen. Once dinner was over, Mary and I were able to sit down and finally have a constructive conversation. I was really impressed by her and wondered the whole time why she was still sitting there talking to me! The next thing I knew, we had been talking for about two hours. I offered to walk her to her house. You can never be too careful crossing the street. We ended up talking a while longer at her door. I was nervous the whole time because I knew the conversation couldn't end unless I got her number. I stuttered a lot and made a fool of myself, but I got the seven numbers I needed...and got off the porch as quickly as possible. Before she could change her mind.

When Sam told me he had a friend he wanted to line me up with, I hardly gave it a second thought. Anyone Sam lined me up with would be a total mismatch, I thought. How wrong that would prove to be! After several attempts to set us up however, I finally consented to the dinner. I thought that it would be an easy out for me without letting Sam down. Of course I hoped for a positive outcome, but didn't really expect one. After all, I didn't really believe in fairytale love stories... I ended up being really sick on the day of the dinner and hardly felt like going. I dragged my feet getting ready and took a long time making the potatoes. Finally, I gathered up all of the energy I could and walked over to Sam's. Everyone was waiting and I felt that the whole introduction part couldn't have been more awkward. But soon we were all eating and the focus was off of us and I had time to really look at Paul. He was absolutely adorable and it was hard to keep my eyes off of him. Just watching him through dinner, he struck me as a really solid person and I relaxed a bit. He was mature and easy-going and had a good sense of humor.
I wanted to get to know him better, but found that making any conversation over dinner was kinda difficult. I was glad when we were able to talk afterward, and found that the more we talked, the more I liked him. I was really happy when he offered to walk me home and enjoyed the few extra minutes we had on my front porch. I still didn't really think that this would go anywhere but was surprised when he asked for my number. I assumed that he already had it from Sam or would get it from him later. But I took that as a good sign and started looking forward to our next date.
